Cyprus Lifestyle archiveNine productions, nine countries and a tightrope act set to live rock: ArtCargo's outdoor festival takes over central Nicosia from 16 to 25 October, free of charge.
ArtCargo opens its second edition in Nicosia on 16 October, turning the capital's public spaces into stages for nine productions and 43 outdoor performances over ten days. Every event is free to attend, a detail that matters for a festival aiming to fill streets and squares rather than ticketed halls.
The programme runs through 25 October across central Nicosia, drawing companies from Cyprus, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Argentina, Catalonia and Japan. It is a wide net for a festival still in its second year, and the spread of nationalities suggests ArtCargo is positioning itself as an international show rather than a purely local affair.
Cypriot choreographer Panos Malactos contributes a new media installation built around water and projection art, staged over five consecutive evenings in the city centre. It is one of the few works with a fixed run rather than a single performance date, giving audiences repeated chances to catch it. French company Basinga brings a tightrope act performed to live rock music, a pairing of physical risk and volume not often seen on a Nicosia street corner.
Finnish group OLO Company performs Soft Spot, a contemporary circus piece. Also on the bill is Kanon Ito, an eleven-year-old world champion in trickline, who gives three shows in Nicosia and leads a dedicated masterclass aimed at young people. Her presence on the programme, both performing and teaching, signals that ArtCargo wants to leave something behind for local participants, not just deliver a series of one-off spectacles.
The festival's first outing, held in Limassol, attracted close to 40,000 attendees, according to ArtCargo. That figure sets a benchmark for the Nicosia edition, which trades a coastal, marina-facing city for the denser, more historic core of the capital. Whether the same crowds materialise in a landlocked setting, spread across nine productions rather than concentrated on a waterfront, will be a real test of the format as it moves inland.
ArtCargo's sponsors for this edition include the VF Foundation, Exness, Mellow and property developer bbf, a backing that spans finance, hospitality and real estate and points to broader commercial interest in the festival's expansion beyond its Limassol debut.
